Snowboxx: supporting a UK-led production in the French Alps

Transforming the alpine town of Avoriaz into a week-long festival across slopes, clubs, and pop-ups. All powered by Weezevent’s flexible access control and hybrid cashless system, tailored to every venue and need.

  • 6,000 attendees per day
  • 7 days
  • 150 devices deployed
  • 7 fixed autonomous top-up stations

Snowboxx transforms the ski resort of Avoriaz into a high-energy, week-long music festival. With stages, clubs, restaurants, and activities spread across town, the UK organisers needed a flexible system to manage multiple venues, changing schedules, and diverse stakeholders, all in one platform.

One event, many locations

From local nightclubs to mountain stages and pop-up food spots, Snowboxx operated across multiple environments, each with its own timing, setup, and sales requirements. Some areas needed to process payments for ski passes or brunch, others to manage sponsored activities or nightclub entries.

Bringing it all together required more than just technology. It called for a system that was reliable, easy to use for both staff and guests, and flexible enough to handle a decentralised setup with constant movement and varied connectivity.

Cashless: flexible payments, fast top-ups, hybrid model

To match the festival’s wide footprint, Weezevent deployed a hybrid cashless system combining two payment methods across the resort.

In the main festival areas like the main stage and activity zones, a closed-loop setup was implemented, meaning attendees used a festival-specific cashless balance, topped up in advance or on site, to pay for goods. Once loaded, the balance operated independently of the internet, allowing transactions to continue even without Wi-Fi or 4G.

Meanwhile, local bars and restaurants ran on an open-loop system, where guests paid with regular bank cards. Full menus were pre-loaded onto the payment terminals for smooth service.

In total, over 100 payment terminals were rolled out across Avoriaz. Seven UMTs (unmanned top-up points) — autonomous charging stations that operate without staff — were deployed to support cashless operations, offering a flexible and self-service solution for attendees. These were complemented by one manned top-up station at a central location. Attendees could also top up instantly by scanning QR codes spread across the festival-site, removing the need for a dedicated network, everything ran on existing 4G or Wi-Fi coverage.

Weezevent terminals were also used to sell ski passes, accommodation upgrades, food, drinks, and activities such as brunch and bingo. Sponsors were provided with dedicated devices to manage voucher redemptions, sell merchandise, and power their branded experiences.

Access: one wristband, quick entry

Each attendee’s wristband was paired to their account at the box office upon arrival. From there, all access across the festival was managed through simple NFC scans at the various venues and checkpoints. No re-pairing or delays required.

Access control and accreditation were coordinated from the tourist office, where the Weezevent team ensured clear oversight. Thanks to a flexible setup, scanners could be adjusted in real time through the back office to match changing schedules and entry flows across the different sites.

Local support, international production

Our Weezevent team was deployed on-site to ensure smooth operations throughout the entire week. Team members were stationed at key locations including the tourist office, helpdesk, main stage, Folie Douce, and the snow-covered Boxx Club.

Despite the festival being produced by a UK-based team, local coordination was essential. Our French-speaking team worked closely with the local managers to handle training, deployments, and live support from installation to closing night.

Tech that adapts, experiences that flow

With a robust hybrid cashless system and efficient access control, Snowboxx ran smoothly across dozens of venues and touchpoints. Attendees had quick, reliable access and an easy way to pay, while organisers, sponsors, and partners could rely on a stable and flexible infrastructure.

This edition proved that even the most complex, decentralised events can be supported by the right tools and team. Weezevent continues to fine-tune its solutions — ready to support any format, in any terrain.
