JEFFREY LEWIS & THE JUNKYARD
(Indie Rock / Anti-folk)
Jarvis Cocker says Jeffrey Lewis is the finest lyricist of his generation and coming from him that&rsquos quite an accolade. We&rsquore inclined to agree and really it&rsquos quite undeniable when you hear him explain the history of communist China or being sexually assaulted on a train by Will Oldham through song with an ease that makes you forget he&rsquos being limited by rhythm and rhyme. Jeff&rsquos the product of loving beatnik parents who raised him in New York&rsquos Lower East Side in a tenement apartment with no television (it seems they&rsquore on to something there). Before Jeffrey could even read he was crazy about comic books, which is probably why listening to his lo-fi anti folk punk rock feels a lot like reading one.
Nearly all of his songs contain at least one killer lyric that you&rsquoll want to tell people about when you hear it. This writer for instance has explained the storyline of &lsquoChelsea Hotel Oral Sex Song&rsquo to every friend and family member. Lewis&rsquos themes may range from bad acid trips to politcal history and oral sex, but there&rsquos an overriding preoccupation that tends towards the life affirming. Relentless positivity usually makes us puke, but how irresistible are lines like, &ldquobad times give you something to talk about/the next time you feel you&rsquore all worn out/remember life is a story, don&rsquot you doubt/it only takes a day for everything to turn around&rdquo.
Some of us actually get jealous the first time we&rsquore just about to play someone Jeffrey, because they&rsquore going to get to spend the next few months picking out favourite lines and hanging on every word until a story ends. His songs are so full of self-deprecation, honesty, sadness, humour and truth that he&rsquos nothing less than a gem to be held up and treasured. And in a world where a song that begins with the line &ldquomy life is brilliant&rdquo can stay at number one for over a month, we need that more than ever.

JOY AS A TOY
(Avant pop)
Almost precisely 2 years after the release of their first album Valparaiso, Joy as A Toy is back with a new opus full of un-nice sentiments, in a position to do justice to its self-awarded title of Vampire Rock destroyers. Dead As A Dodo immortalizes this pretty crazy project presented during the 1st ZomBIFF Night, staged by Cheap Satanism Records at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. Joy As A Toy took the opportunity to use analogical synthetizers and samplers in order to play a repertoire which was freely inspired by original soundtracks in movies directed by the master of horror Dario Argento. It should have been a mere fun exercise, but the experience turned out to be an incredibly fertile playing field for the trio consisting of Gil Mortio, Clément Nourry and Jean Philippe De Gheest. The result positively surprised the audience, which was not expecting such an enjoyable uppercut in the face. Therefore, the band has decided to convert the attempt into an album in due form.
Dead As A Dodo sounds as if it were the ideal soundtrack for an hallucinated nightmare, a psychedelic and angular trip as well as a snoring and stumbling B movie. In a few words, it is venomous, funny, grating and implacable.
SETH FAERGOLZIA
(Anti-folk)
You may have seen Seth on his recent tour opening for Jeffrey Lewis in the UK this past autumn. You may know of him from over 10 years fronting the highly influential NYC freak folk/anti-folk experimental band Dufus. You may remember him from his track on the Rough Trade Antifolk Vol. 1 compilation, or from over 20 albums with Dufus or under his own name. He has toured all over the UK, US and Europe for years, and stylistically has been compared to Frank Zappa, Deerhoof, Devendra Banhart, The Moldy Peaches & The Dirty Projectors. Currently he's working with a big band art-rock opera format in upstate New York entitled 23psaegz, and finishing off a new album due out this spring to be released on ROIR. But for the purposes of this tour he'll be performing as a one-man-band simultaneously playing guitar, glockenspiel, kick drum, electronics, and vocals, which he manages to make sound surprisingly full.
